The Function of DC High Voltage Divider

1. High voltage signal conversion

The core function of a DC high-voltage divider is to reduce high voltages (such as several kilovolts to several hundred kilovolts) that are difficult to measure directly into low voltage signals (such as a few volts or millivolts) at a fixed ratio. It achieves voltage division internally through a high-precision resistor or capacitor network (high voltage arm and low voltage arm) connected in series, so that the signal output from the low voltage end is linearly related to the input high voltage, facilitating safe measurement by subsequent instruments such as oscilloscopes or digital meters.

2. Ensure measurement safety

Direct contact with high voltage electricity poses significant risks. The voltage divider physically isolates the high and low voltage ends, and adopts an insulated casing and shielding design to effectively prevent electric shock or arc discharge, protecting the safety of operators and equipment. At the same time, the low-voltage signal terminal can be directly connected to standard instruments without being exposed to hazardous environments.

3. System monitoring and fault protection

In power systems or high-voltage equipment, voltage dividers monitor DC voltage in real-time (such as HVDC transmission lines, energy storage systems). Its output signal can be fed back to the control system, triggering overvoltage protection, circuit breaker or alarm mechanism to prevent equipment damage due to abnormal voltage and improve system reliability.

4. Calibration and testing applications

The voltage divider serves as a reference device for calibrating the accuracy of high voltage sources, electrostatic meters, and other instruments. For example, in the laboratory, by comparing the output of a voltage divider with a standard signal, the accuracy of the output voltage of a high-voltage generator or withstand voltage testing equipment can be verified.

5. High precision and stability design

To ensure measurement accuracy, materials with extremely low temperature coefficients (such as metal foil resistors and ceramic capacitors) are selected for the voltage divider, and the structure is optimized to reduce distributed capacitance and external electromagnetic interference. Some models have built-in temperature compensation circuits that are suitable for wide temperature environments (such as -40 ℃ to 85 ℃), with long-term stability of ± 0.1%/year.

7. Adaptability to special environments

For extreme conditions such as high humidity and strong electromagnetic fields, the voltage divider adopts gas filled sealing (such as SF6 insulation) or oil immersed structure to avoid leakage current or breakdown risk. The outdoor model is equipped with a rain cover and a UV resistant shell, meeting the IP67 protection level.

8. Signal compatibility and extended functionality

Partial voltage dividers integrate voltage followers or fiber optic transmission modules to convert low-voltage signals into optical signals, achieving long-distance lossless transmission. In addition, multi tap design can support multi range switching (such as 100:1, 1000:1), adapting to different voltage level requirements.
