What Is the Acceptable Condensation Point for Transformer Oil? How to Choose the Indicator Based on the Region?

The qualification standard for the freezing point of transformer oil is not a nationally unified fixed value, but is closely related to the climatic conditions of the region where the transformer is located. Only by understanding this logic can one correctly interpret the test results and make reasonable oil selection decisions.

Why does condensation point affect the safe operation of transformers

The insulating oil in transformers serves both as a heat dissipator and an insulator within the equipment. Heat dissipation relies on the natural convection circulation of the oil, and the fluidity of the oil decreases rapidly as the temperature drops. When the oil temperature approaches its freezing point, the oil becomes extremely viscous, and the convection circulation almost ceases, leading to a sharp decrease in heat dissipation efficiency. At this point, even if the transformer load remains unchanged, the winding temperature will rapidly rise, causing thermal failure.

For transformers installed outdoors (especially in northern regions), where the lowest temperature in winter may reach -30℃ or even lower, it is necessary to use insulating oil with a sufficiently low freezing point to ensure that the oil maintains good fluidity at the lowest ambient temperature.

Qualification criteria and regional model selection reference

According to the basic requirements of GB/T 7595 "Quality Criteria for Transformer Oils in Service":

In general temperate regions, the freezing point of new transformer oil should not be higher than -45℃ (some standards require it to be below -40℃)

In cold regions (such as Inner Mongolia, Northeast China, and northern Xinjiang), low-freezing transformer oil with a freezing point below -45℃ (such as No. 25 and No. 45 transformer oil, where the number indicates the absolute value of the freezing point) should be selected

The empirical principle in engineering practice is that the freezing point should be at least 10-15℃ lower than the local historical minimum temperature, leaving sufficient safety margin.

The freezing point of transformer oils of different grades

Common transformer insulating oils in China are classified according to their freezing points:

No. 10 transformer oil: freezing point ≤ -10℃ (basically eliminated)

No. 25 transformer oil: freezing point ≤ -25℃

No. 45 transformer oil: freezing point ≤ -45℃ (suitable for severe cold regions)

The measuring range of HZNQ-1101 spans from room temperature to -45℃, which can meet the freezing point measurement requirements of all the aforementioned transformer oils. It is an ideal choice for substation laboratories.

Condensation point change of oil products during operation

During the oxidative degradation process of long-term operating transformer oil, high molecular weight polar compounds are produced. These substances can affect the low-temperature flow characteristics of the oil, leading to an increase in the freezing point. Therefore, for transformers with a long operating history, it is necessary to measure the freezing point during preventive tests, compare it with historical data, and promptly detect any trend of increasing freezing point.
