In the procurement list for substation maintenance, the "SF6 leak detector" is a commonly used tool with high frequency. But before purchasing, looking through the technical manuals of various manufacturers, one often sees two major technical routes: "electrochemical principle" and "infrared spectroscopy absorption (NDIR) principle".
What are the differences between these two mainstream routes? Why are more and more power operation and maintenance teams inclined to use infrared principle detection instruments? We can objectively compare from three dimensions: underlying physical characteristics, service life, and daily maintenance:
1、 Sensor lifespan and wear mechanism
Electrochemical sensor: Its measurement essence is to use the oxidation-reduction reaction of the measured gas on the working electrode to generate a weak electrolytic current. The electrode catalyst and internal electrolyte are constantly consumed and aged over time, and the sensitivity of the sensor usually gradually decreases after 1-2 years of service. It is necessary to regularly return to the factory for disassembly and replacement of the sensor core;
Infrared NDIR sensors (such as HZSF1467): measure the physical absorption and attenuation characteristics of specific wavelength infrared light using SF6 molecules. There is no electrolyte or electrochemical loss components inside, and the sensor is designed to have a lifespan of up to 10 years, with a significantly longer service life.
2、 High concentration anti toxicity and cross reactivity
Electrochemical sensor: When the probe is accidentally placed near a severely leaking high concentration gas source on site, the electrode surface is prone to excessive polarization, causing "sensor poisoning" that is difficult to recover in a short period of time and may even be directly scrapped; Meanwhile, if there are trace amounts of sulfide or alcohol gases in the air, it is easy to generate false alarms and cross reactions;
Infrared NDIR sensor: only absorbs and resonates with SF6 specific infrared characteristic wavelengths, and does not react chemically with other conventional environmental gases; Even if high concentration gas is inhaled, it can be restored to normal after automatic blowing through the gas path, and the anti pollution performance is more stable.
3、 Full lifecycle usage cost
Although the initial purchase price of infrared leak detectors is slightly higher than that of simple electrochemical instruments, the comprehensive operation and maintenance costs of infrared equipment have good economic viability after 3-5 years of continuous service due to the elimination of frequent replacement of electrochemical probes and return to factory calibration cycles.
Baoding Huazheng Electric HZSF1467, with its mature dual wavelength infrared architecture and temperature compensation technology, provides users with a stable inspection solution with long service life and minimal maintenance while balancing the practical range of 0-99.9 PPM.
